T-Mobile offers up new plan to help connect with family and friends overseas

T-Mobile has announced they will make it easier and cheaper for their Simple Plan customers to connect with friends and family overseas. The press release can be seen below.

T-Mobile’s in the giving mood a bit early this holiday season.

On the heels of announcing a pre-Black Friday free tablet offer yesterday, the Un-carrier announced yet another holiday offer today, making it easier than ever to connect with family and friends overseas. Starting now, everyone on your Simple Choice™ plan can enjoy unlimited calling from the U.S. to landlines in more than 70 countries worldwide for just $5 a month for the entire account.  That’s right.  Per account – not per line.  So, $5 a month covers your entire family up to 10 lines.
Or, starting today, for just $10 per month, the whole family can get unlimited calling to mobile phones in more than 30 countries and 1,000 minutes to mobile phones in Mexico, on top of unlimited calls to landlines in 70+ countries. That’s a real savings over the current rates ($10 and $15 per month per line for the landline and landline plus mobile calling respectively), especially for families.  In fact, a family of four can save $420 a year compared to paying per individual.

WhatsApp announces free lifetime subscription for Indians

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging app for the smartphones today. It almost killed the traditional SMS and had already caused a serious dent in the SMS revenue of mobile companies. The app is available on all the platforms. The company has a good news in store for Indians; it won’t be charging any sum for renewal of subscription of services.

Vice President of WhatsApp, Neeraj Arora, said that the company understands the low concentration of credit cards in the country, and paying for a service won’t be an option for many. The company usually charges $1 every year to renew the subscription, which is a fairly cheap price. But for Indians, WhatsApp said the magic word – Free!

Mr. Arora was speaking at his alma mater Indian School of Business, where he conversed on a lot of topics. He recalled that the founders of WhatsApp were crazy, and he got into the company by forcing his way in. He took up the bits that the founders were not interested in, like the business aspect of things. The company was recently acquired by Facebook for a gargantuan price of $19 billion.

The future of WhatsApp was also discussed, and he said that the company will remain the same even after the acquisition. The company will not be allowing ads in the app as they believe that it will not be a pleasant experience for the users. Considering the massive seven crore (70 million) users that it has in this country, WhatsApp may not want to give them an opportunity to consider its competitors.

Lava seals the number 2 spot in Indian Market, while Micromax continues to lead

The year 2014 has been the boom for Indo-China/Indian brands as they did some spectacular stuff which even big multinationals failed to do. Ever since late 2011 when Nokia lost possession from the Indian market, it has been a fight for all the companies to be the king of the Indian Market which was dominated by middle class people with low budgets.

The emergence of Chinese companies into the Indian market has taken most of the sheen off the Indian phone makers. Even Motorola’s high specification, low priced devices have taken customers away from the Indian handset manufacturers. But with the combined strengths of feature phones and smartphones, the Indian brands have continued to grow. The companies have benefitted from the shift to smartphones in the lower segment, and their offerings are perceived as affordable. These factors have helped Lava reach the second spot on the podium amongst the Indian handset model.

The report was published by market research venture called Cybex Exim. The company took into consideration the following handset manufacturers: Micromax, Lava, Motorola, Karbonn, Gionee, Lenovo, Spice, Intex, XOLO, Panasonic, Zen, Maxx, Videocon, Xiaomi and Lemon.

To elaborate on their findings, Mr. Amit Gupta, Cybex Exim said:
"To understand the market dynamics, we track the import shipments of various players on a daily basis. Domestic players have shown remarkable growth over the last two quarters; majorly credited to the success of Indian brands like Micromax, Lava and Karbonn. With local vendors reducing the price gap between the entry level smartphones and feature phones, usage for mid-price phones is expected to increase at a high rate. At the same time, the recent launch of Android One devices is expected to drive more volumes in the price sensitive market with many other local players geared up to introduce their devices in the coming quarter.”

Cybex Exim’s findings is as follows:

Lava has said that the company will be investing about 500 crores in a phased manner to set up its own manufacturing unit in India over the next couple of years. This would be a positive step towards increasing tech-based manufacturing workforce in the country.

It’s great to see these Indian companies on a growth track. But looking at the competition they are facing against the Chinese companies, its time the companies up-ed their game. The phones need to get better in terms of specs and overall quality. The Indian companies may also want to take a leap into the flagship business and challenge the name brands.

11/4 Roundup: Google + LG and Nexus 6

GOOGLE AND LG ENTER INTO GLOBAL PATENT LICENSE AGREEMENT

Google has been dominating the smartphone/tech news headlines as of late, most notably with their new devices the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 and the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop. While some of today's news as to do with the former, something bigger came about today.

Google and longtime partners LG, who co-created the most-popular Nexus device to date (Nexus 5), have agreed to a long-term patent cross-licensing agreement. The agreement, which spans 10 years will cover a wide products and technologies. The official press release statement can be read below.
“We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG,” said Allen Lo, deputy general counsel for patents at Google. “By working together on cross-licenses like this, companies can focus on bringing great products and services to consumers around the world.”

“LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives,” said J.H. Lee, executive vice president and head of the LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center."

The two companies have long been partners, coming together for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. One can imagine that this only solidifies their future together and will most likely release another Nexus device sometime in the future.

The Google Play Store has been 'out of inventory' ever since a few minutes after Google opened up pre-orders for the Nexus 6 on October 29th. That will change tomorrow.

According to the new Nexus 6 store page, Google will work to have devices in stock every Wednesday. The problem is, they don't say what time that it will be up and running. The first time the device went up for pre-order, it was around 12 to 12:30 (central standard time) when the site went live, so we expect it to be no different.

It also says that devices will be available for pre-order through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular later this month. One major carrier is missing from this message, and that once again is Verizon Wireless. Verizon was expected to carry the Nexus 6, but they didn't support the Nexus 5, so who knows.

Dates for individual carriers have not been mentioned, but we have contacted T-Mobile, and the have said multiple times that the device will launch on November 12th.

Are you going to be spending your time tomorrow being unproductive and repeatedly hitting F5? Let us know!

If Samsung adopted Motorola's methodology, would Samsung devices sell better?

Everyone knows the name of Samsung's user interface that is heavily layered over Android... and it is TouchWiz. Before we get started, I just want to say that I am a longtime Samsung user, previously owning the Galaxy S3, S4, S5, Note 3, and most recently the Note 4. Everyone knows, that TouchWiz, while it looks somewhat visually appealing (in some cases), is not the best thing for performance. So the question is, if Samsung went the way of Motorola, minimized UI interference, put out updates as soon as possible, would Samsung become more appealing?

Motorola on their latest devices have all been near-stock Android. There isn't any major design changes to the notification panel, settings, or skin overlays, and the only added features to the device, are Motorola apps. It's relatively unnoticeable.

Profits have been falling for quite some time now for Samsung and this year, Samsung took a big step to try and reverse that trend. Samsung has always been stubborn about changing their devices to meet consumer demands, however they started making phones with what everyone wanted: metal frames. While the devices received praise for their design, it hasn't changed their profit outlook so it's time to continue making changes.

I have always had a love-hate relationship with the Galaxy line-up. On one hand, they always have the latest hardware such as processors, big batteries, and great cameras. On the other hand, fluidity of moving throughout the phone, switching between apps, going to the multitasking menu, or even pressing the home button to go to the homescreen has always been slightly sluggish.

For example, I thought the Note 4 was blazing fast after I picked it up. I had not the slightest problem with the performance due to the fact that the latest hardware picked up the slack of the TouchWiz UI. This to me, is the best performing device that Samsung has put out to date by a large margin. However, that all changed once I picked up a Nexus 5.

The Galaxy Note 4 has a Snapdragon 805 processor and 3 GB of RAM, whereas the Nexus 5 has a Snapdragon 800 processor with 2 GB of RAM, not to mention the device is year old. I installed the Android 5.0 Lollipop developer preview on my Nexus 5, and was blown away by the performance. Granted, Lollipop is designed to maximize performance and be faster than KitKat, I was still surprised by how drastic the difference was between the Nexus 5 and the Note 4.

This got me thinking. If Samsung were to minimize their UI's footprint, would they be more successful? Would it encourage people to give Samsung's products another chance? Let us know what you think and if Samsung should change their approach of software development when it comes to their phones.

I'm going to end with this: If they were to put out a Google Play Edition Galaxy Note 4, I would pick that up in a second!

Did you miss out on a Nexus 6 pre-order? You can find them on eBay for 2K!

It happened with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and now it's happening with the Nexus 6. The only difference is the Nexus 6 isn't even released yet, and isn't expected to be shipped for 3-4 weeks. Multiple users on eBay have ponied up their Nexus 6 pre-orders, and some are going for extraordinary amounts.

While most are listed at or around $1,000 for a 32 GB model in Midnight Blue, a 64 GB model in the popular Midnight Blue is going for $2,000. With 19 bids and 9 bidders, some people really want this phone! Don't worry, you can still get your bid in, there's still over a day left on the auction.

What some people might not know, is that the expected launch date for carriers may come before Google's. We got in contact with a T-Mobile rep, and they stated the phone will be launched on November 12th. The key here is that it is a launch date, not a pre-order date. So while some might be bidding for a phone that won't be available until late November, you could beat them to the punch.

Samsung 5G Connection!

We have all heard about 3G and 4G, and as of now 4G is the fastest wireless connection...or is it? Let's welcome the next generation, the 5G. Although it's not really a thing yet, that didn't stop Samsung from this idea. Still in the prototype stage, more changes will be made before it is officially released before the masses are able to use it. It's crazy, but it is also amazing. Samsung was able to get a peak speed of 950 MB per second which is already mind-blowing. This was made possible by a high-frequency 28 GHz signal used. The only downfall is that higher frequency means shorter range. Samsung found its way around that with what they call "Hybrid Adaptive Array Technology" which boosts the range of the signal.

Are you looking forward to this technology or 4G speed is enough?

Project Ara and Phonebloks: Change is coming

Currently, the smartphone devices we buy are manufactured by one company and the parts that go into the device are up to them. The consumer has no say over what parts go into the device, even if it would increase desirability or performance. The devices we buy all have an expiration date because there is no way to upgrade parts and they are at the mercy of the latest technology. The concept Phonebloks and the Google Project Ara are expected to change all of that.

Phonebloks all started as an idea in the early months of 2013 from a Dutch designer named Dave Hakkens. When he broke his camera, he had no way of repairing it, rendering it useless. Devices today are either much too complicated to fix because of their design, or the parts that are needed cannot be purchased. Much like other electronics, when one part goes bad inside of a device, there is no repairing it, we just throw it away and upgrade. According to SC Johnson, approximately 140 million cellphones in America ended up in the land fill every year. That isn't even counting the entire world or other electronics such as computers, cameras, televisions, etc.

The graph below is courtesy of the Electronics Take Back Coalition. In 2012, there was over 3.4 million tons of electronic waste, 2.4 million tons or 70% of the waste ended up in a landfill. To give a perspective to how much weight that actually is, the Empire State Building weighs around 350,000 tons. That equates to throwing away almost seven Empire State Buildings every year.

ewaste stats 2012

With Phonbloks, it introduced the world to phone modularity. Modularity is the concept of making a device have easily interchangeable parts. The best example of something that is modular is computers. If a part on a computer, such as a stick of RAM, video card, sound card, CPU, etc., goes bad, we can easily replace it without throwing away the entire computer. If a phone came with the ability to have parts easily swapped and or replaced, it would drastically cut down on e-waste.

Cutting down on e-waste isn't the only positive that comes from Phonbloks, it is the ability to have complete control of your device. When you buy a smartphone in today's market, you are at the mercy of the phone manufacturer. The device you buy, is just that, and isn't anything more. There is no upgrading it or customizing to how you wish. For example, if you like Samsung displays, but prefer a Sony camera, you can easily combine those two on your own device with ease.

It would also give you the opportunity to have different profiles. Phonebloks is expected to have multiple sized frames to fit a certain need at a certain time. If you were going on a trip and wanted to pack light, you could user a smaller framed phone. Instead of having multiple devices, you can easily store extra frames and bloks and use them when you want. If you are going on a flight, you have the ability to take your larger frame to have a bigger display and bigger battery so you can watch movies. If you are going on a hike, but your 8 megapixel camera isn't good enough to get the pictures you want, you can easily swap out the lens and put on a bigger 16 megapixel camera.

Not only would this be a great convenience, but Phonbloks would render devices future proof. New technology comes out everyday, making current processors, RAM, and even cameras obsolete. Currently, we just get rid of our old device and upgrade. With Phonebloks that all changes. If Qualcomm were to release their newest Snapdragon processor a few months after you picked up your new phone, you can easily just buy the new CPU blok. You could either hold on to the old CPU just in case, or sell it on the internet to another user who doesn't mind older technology. If you were to drop your phone and shatter your display, a new one can be obtained and clicked on in a few minutes.

Phonebloks is a vision, an idea, and movement. Its end goal is to help the existing industry change forms of development and production that produce less waste. Phonebloks isn't going to manufacture the device, but they are leading the charge as far as pushing other companies towards production. In late October, Phonebloks announced their partnership which is targeted at making the first modular smartphone. This is when Project Ara is initially released.

Project Ara's initial exploration started in 2012, and work on the project started in April of 2012. After the announcement of the official collaboration of the two entities, Motorola went on a five-month road trip throughout the U.S. to gauge customer interest in customizable phones.

While this idea started as a vision and concept, Project Ara is bringing it to life. It is not the complete magnitude of the original Phonebloks concept, but it a great start. The entire back is not removable, instead it comes with pre-determined slot sizes. They will come in 1x1, 2x1, and 2x2 slots. Common modules that can be currently expected to be able to swap includes cameras, speakers, projectors, sensors, etc. This ability to swap modules can be done without turning the phone off due to a small back-up battery that will be on board.

The first version of the first modular phone was debuted at Google's developer conference April 15 and 16. Although they had a prototype, the device froze on its boot-up and was incapable of progressing further in the start-up.

This has led to some concerns arising from Project Ara and Phonebloks. The thought is that there will be so many options for modules, as far as brands, that some might be incompatible with the device or other modules. Companies would have to follow a strict guideline as to what their components would be compatible with. It was also criticized for its 25% up in size and weight. The current Project Ara is 9.7 mm thick whereas the iPhone 5s is 7.6 mm thick.

While the modular smartphone is still a concept and not yet released, Phonebloks is already a success. It has gained our awareness of how much e-waste the world currently creates. This has been the number one goal of Dave Hakkens and Phonebloks from the beginning. Hopefully the Phonebloks vision leads to others recycling their devices over throwing them in the garbage, regardless of what kind of electronic it is or the availability of a modular phone.

While some think that a modular phone won't catch on, that has been said for multiple innovations that the world has seen. Google has been a number one contributor to changing how we do things, whether it is Google Maps, Gmail, or the Android operating systems (sid 32). Google will continue to innovate, regardless of the success or failure of Project Ara. The first release of the device is expected to be released in Q1 of 2015, which is only four months away. It is expected to launch as a starter kit, with basic hardware for around $50. Additionally frames will be $15, whereas additional hardware prices have yet to be announced. The device is made, its up to the consumers to decide on its success.

Regardless of its success, its good to see innovation in the smartphone market. If an entire modular phone doesn't catch, hopefully aspects of it will, such as making certain parts on a device modular like the display or camera. Things don't change if we sit idle; so the fact that Phonebloks and Project Ara are taking the initiative and pushing the limits of smartphones is a welcomed sign. People may criticize the idea and how it's illogical or won't work, but what is the worst thing that could happen; the finished product never materializes? What's the best thing that could happen? We could have completely modular smartphones that are tailored to us. If it doesn't happen in Q1 of 2015, it is definitely on the horizon.

If you have any comments or questions, feel free to find us on Twitter and Facebook or leave a comment directly on this post.

Below we have added comments from Reddit users on their thoughts of Project Ara.

Qualcomm to debut the first multi-core 64-bit processor in a smartphone at IFA 2014

The king of Android processors, Qualcomm, is expected to debut their first Snapdragon multi-core 64-bit processor at IFA 2014 in a new smartphone. Snapdragon has long been the go-to processor for phone manufacturers sporting Android operating systems, but they have been behind the curve by not making the jump to 64-bit processors.

That is changing with Android L, because it is expected to support 64-bit architecture. Previous versions of Android weren't compatible 64-bit processors, so there was no need to send it out on devices yet, The tweet sent out can be seen below.

Asus new smartwatch to be called 'ZenWatch'

Asus has released another teaser for their upcoming smartwatch, and it officially has a name, 'ZenWatch'. The name coincides with other Asus products such as the ZenBook and ZenFone, The ZenWatch is expected to be debuted this September at IFA 2014, and will be a direct competitor to the LG G Watch, Galaxy Gear, and the Moto 360. New Nexus device won't be 'Nexus 6'

The latest news to come out surrounding the Google and Motorola collaboration about the new Nexus device is that it won't be called the 'Nexus 6'. This is due to a lawsuit that is being pursued by the estate of Philip K. Dick, who was a prominent sci-fi novelist. In his 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?", a bounty hunter hunts down androids known as Nexus-6 models.

The Philip K. Dick estate has been pursuing this lawsuit since the first Nexus device was released in early 2010. They believe that it is infringement on their intellectual-property rights.

If Google were to name their new Nexus device, the '6', it could be clearly seen as copyright infringement of the 1968 novel. The codename that is circulating around the new Nexus device has been 'Nexus X', which is not yet confirmed.

The new Nexus device is expected to ship with a 5.9 inch QHD display (1440 x 2560), a Snapdragon 805 CPU, and a 13 megapixel camera featuring optical image stabilization (OIS). This will most likely see a late--October or early-November release.Rumor has it, it will be a quiet Halloween release.

Samsung Galaxy S5 takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: Donates to MND

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been storming the internet for the past couple of weeks, having notable people such as George W. Bush, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates take on the challenge and donate money.

The description of the disease can be seen below courtesy of the MND Assoc. website:

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help you achieve the best possible quality of life.
The latest 'celebrity' to take on the challenge is the Samsung Galaxy S5. Many are criticizing Samsung for using the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as a gimmick to promote their device. They tweeted a video, that can be seen above,  What they don't see is that Samsung has already donated. The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association was tagged in the original tweet from Samsung Mobile UK and it stated "Brr, Our #GS5 took the ALS #IceBucketChallenge in support of @MNDAssoc Are you up for the challenge?" The MND Association response can be seen below.

The donation amount is unspecified, but it would be hard to believe that a multi-billion dollar company would use a disease as a promotion and not donate. It would be a PR nightmare.

You can find out how to donate here for MND or here for ALS

New Sharp smartphone has thinnest bezels seen on a smartphone

When someone hears the brand name 'Sharp', they immediately jump to the TVs they make. The name Sharp in the United States is pretty unheard of when it comes to smart phones, but that is all about to change. The new device they are releasing, the Aquos Crystal, will be one of the firsts of its kind.

Sharp has been one of the first manufacturers that are making TVs with extremely thin bezels, and now they are bringing it to their handsets. According to the latest reports, Sharp has announced this new device that features almost no bezels on three of the four sides of the device.

This device is expected to be released solely at Sprint so far. It comes with mid-range specs with a 720p display, Snapdragon 400 series processor, and 1.5GB of RAM. While it is not the most powerful, it might be one of the more innovative smartphone designs to date.
