Sony going even more waterproof?

The latest news to come from Sony is a tweet stating “We’ll be getting deep at #IFA2014. But how deep..?” with the picture seen below.

Sony has been leading the charge making their flagship devices waterproof. Currently, their Z1S and Z2 come with an IP 58 rating, which is good for immersion beyond 1 meter, but no greater than 1.5 meters according to Sony. In the picture, it shows on arrow pointing down above 2m. This suggests that Sony could be releasing the most waterproof smartphone to date.

We'll find out at IFA 2014, on September 3rd when Sony holds their presser. Could it be related to the Z3? We'll have to wait and see.

New Samsung teaser shows off Galaxy Note 4

The latest teaser to come from Samsung surrounding the Galaxy Note 4 is this unlisted 'unpacked' video. This video continues the trend of the previous unpacked teasers by featuring an emphasis on the S-Pen. The one difference on this teaser, is that you actually get a glimpse of the Galaxy Note 4. While this is only a silhouette of the device, it gives us one of the best looks as to what to expect design-wise on this phablet.

The 'Unpacked' event is scheduled for September 3rd at IFA 2014 in Berlin, Germany. The Note 4 is expected to ship with 4 GB of RAM, a QHD display, and a new form factor. The device is expected to be released on September 15th. If any other teasers or news breaks on the Galaxy Note 4, we'll have you covered as always.

Project Ara and Phonebloks: Change is coming

Currently, the smartphone devices we buy are manufactured by one company and the parts that go into the device are up to them. The consumer has no say over what parts go into the device, even if it would increase desirability or performance. The devices we buy all have an expiration date because there is no way to upgrade parts and they are at the mercy of the latest technology. The concept Phonebloks and the Google Project Ara are expected to change all of that.

Phonebloks all started as an idea in the early months of 2013 from a Dutch designer named Dave Hakkens. When he broke his camera, he had no way of repairing it, rendering it useless. Devices today are either much too complicated to fix because of their design, or the parts that are needed cannot be purchased. Much like other electronics, when one part goes bad inside of a device, there is no repairing it, we just throw it away and upgrade. According to SC Johnson, approximately 140 million cellphones in America ended up in the land fill every year. That isn't even counting the entire world or other electronics such as computers, cameras, televisions, etc.

The graph below is courtesy of the Electronics Take Back Coalition. In 2012, there was over 3.4 million tons of electronic waste, 2.4 million tons or 70% of the waste ended up in a landfill. To give a perspective to how much weight that actually is, the Empire State Building weighs around 350,000 tons. That equates to throwing away almost seven Empire State Buildings every year.

ewaste stats 2012

With Phonbloks, it introduced the world to phone modularity. Modularity is the concept of making a device have easily interchangeable parts. The best example of something that is modular is computers. If a part on a computer, such as a stick of RAM, video card, sound card, CPU, etc., goes bad, we can easily replace it without throwing away the entire computer. If a phone came with the ability to have parts easily swapped and or replaced, it would drastically cut down on e-waste.

Cutting down on e-waste isn't the only positive that comes from Phonbloks, it is the ability to have complete control of your device. When you buy a smartphone in today's market, you are at the mercy of the phone manufacturer. The device you buy, is just that, and isn't anything more. There is no upgrading it or customizing to how you wish. For example, if you like Samsung displays, but prefer a Sony camera, you can easily combine those two on your own device with ease.

It would also give you the opportunity to have different profiles. Phonebloks is expected to have multiple sized frames to fit a certain need at a certain time. If you were going on a trip and wanted to pack light, you could user a smaller framed phone. Instead of having multiple devices, you can easily store extra frames and bloks and use them when you want. If you are going on a flight, you have the ability to take your larger frame to have a bigger display and bigger battery so you can watch movies. If you are going on a hike, but your 8 megapixel camera isn't good enough to get the pictures you want, you can easily swap out the lens and put on a bigger 16 megapixel camera.

Not only would this be a great convenience, but Phonbloks would render devices future proof. New technology comes out everyday, making current processors, RAM, and even cameras obsolete. Currently, we just get rid of our old device and upgrade. With Phonebloks that all changes. If Qualcomm were to release their newest Snapdragon processor a few months after you picked up your new phone, you can easily just buy the new CPU blok. You could either hold on to the old CPU just in case, or sell it on the internet to another user who doesn't mind older technology. If you were to drop your phone and shatter your display, a new one can be obtained and clicked on in a few minutes.

Phonebloks is a vision, an idea, and movement. Its end goal is to help the existing industry change forms of development and production that produce less waste. Phonebloks isn't going to manufacture the device, but they are leading the charge as far as pushing other companies towards production. In late October, Phonebloks announced their partnership which is targeted at making the first modular smartphone. This is when Project Ara is initially released.

Project Ara's initial exploration started in 2012, and work on the project started in April of 2012. After the announcement of the official collaboration of the two entities, Motorola went on a five-month road trip throughout the U.S. to gauge customer interest in customizable phones.

While this idea started as a vision and concept, Project Ara is bringing it to life. It is not the complete magnitude of the original Phonebloks concept, but it a great start. The entire back is not removable, instead it comes with pre-determined slot sizes. They will come in 1x1, 2x1, and 2x2 slots. Common modules that can be currently expected to be able to swap includes cameras, speakers, projectors, sensors, etc. This ability to swap modules can be done without turning the phone off due to a small back-up battery that will be on board.

The first version of the first modular phone was debuted at Google's developer conference April 15 and 16. Although they had a prototype, the device froze on its boot-up and was incapable of progressing further in the start-up.

This has led to some concerns arising from Project Ara and Phonebloks. The thought is that there will be so many options for modules, as far as brands, that some might be incompatible with the device or other modules. Companies would have to follow a strict guideline as to what their components would be compatible with. It was also criticized for its 25% up in size and weight. The current Project Ara is 9.7 mm thick whereas the iPhone 5s is 7.6 mm thick.

While the modular smartphone is still a concept and not yet released, Phonebloks is already a success. It has gained our awareness of how much e-waste the world currently creates. This has been the number one goal of Dave Hakkens and Phonebloks from the beginning. Hopefully the Phonebloks vision leads to others recycling their devices over throwing them in the garbage, regardless of what kind of electronic it is or the availability of a modular phone.

While some think that a modular phone won't catch on, that has been said for multiple innovations that the world has seen. Google has been a number one contributor to changing how we do things, whether it is Google Maps, Gmail, or the Android operating systems (sid 32). Google will continue to innovate, regardless of the success or failure of Project Ara. The first release of the device is expected to be released in Q1 of 2015, which is only four months away. It is expected to launch as a starter kit, with basic hardware for around $50. Additionally frames will be $15, whereas additional hardware prices have yet to be announced. The device is made, its up to the consumers to decide on its success.

Regardless of its success, its good to see innovation in the smartphone market. If an entire modular phone doesn't catch, hopefully aspects of it will, such as making certain parts on a device modular like the display or camera. Things don't change if we sit idle; so the fact that Phonebloks and Project Ara are taking the initiative and pushing the limits of smartphones is a welcomed sign. People may criticize the idea and how it's illogical or won't work, but what is the worst thing that could happen; the finished product never materializes? What's the best thing that could happen? We could have completely modular smartphones that are tailored to us. If it doesn't happen in Q1 of 2015, it is definitely on the horizon.

Alleged iPhone 6 A8 chip leaks

Alleged Apple iPhone 6 system chip, the Apple A8, leaks out in picture

The highly-anticipated iPhone 6, is expected to come with an updated A8 processor. Today, courtesy of NoWhereElse, we get our first look at what will be powering the iPhone 6. In the picture it can be seen that it is much larger than the previous A5 processor.

This is one of many upgrades that is expected to ship with the iPhone 6. Among those is the larger 4.7 and 5.5 inch displays, batteries with larger capacities, thinner design, and the highly-rumored sapphire crystal display.

The iPhone 6 is expected to be debuted on September 9th of this year, and see a release of late-September to early-October.

Latest Galaxy Note 4 render suggests it won't be water-resistant/dust-tight

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 exclusive

Earlier today, a supposed leak of the new upcoming Galaxy Note 4 was exclusively sent to Android Authority from an anonymous source. The image looks very similar to the Galaxy Alpha and the earlier leaked images received by GSM Arena.

One thing that can be observed from the images of the Note 4, is that it will most likely not be water-resistant/dust-tight (IP certified). This can be seen by the earpiece that is on the Note 4, and comparing it to other Samsung devices such as the S4 and the S5.

Below, you can see that the earpieces on the S5 and S4 look completely different. The Note 4 closely resembles the S4, which has no IP rating. Samsung upgraded its earpiece design when it made the S5 IP 67 rated, rendering it dust-tight and water-resistant. As you can see, they are two different constructions. The S4 was known for getting dust in through the earpiece in front of the proximity sensor.

The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to come with a metal chassis for the first time, and our best look for comparison is the Galaxy Alpha, which is already announced. In the picture below, you can see they share a lot of similarities including design, camera/sensor placement, and the earpiece. The render of the Note 4 has an earpiece that looks exactly like its Alpha counterpart, which does not come with an IP rating.

In the earlier image leaks of the Galaxy Note 4 from GSM Arena, a watertight cover can not be seen over the microUSB 3.0 port. This also implies that it will not be IP 67 rated.

This of course, is all speculation and we will not know for sure until the Note 4 is debuted on September 3rd at IFA 2014. We are going with that it won't be water-resistant unless Samsung has come up with a new design that doesn't need protective covers over the charging port. If any new details come up regarding the Note 4 we'll have you covered on Twitter and Facebook.

Qualcomm to debut the first multi-core 64-bit processor in a smartphone at IFA 2014

The king of Android processors, Qualcomm, is expected to debut their first Snapdragon multi-core 64-bit processor at IFA 2014 in a new smartphone. Snapdragon has long been the go-to processor for phone manufacturers sporting Android operating systems, but they have been behind the curve by not making the jump to 64-bit processors.

That is changing with Android L, because it is expected to support 64-bit architecture. Previous versions of Android weren't compatible 64-bit processors, so there was no need to send it out on devices yet, The tweet sent out can be seen below.

New details surrounding Galaxy Note 4 fingerprint scanner

There are few guaranteed things that will come with the upcoming phablet, the Galaxy Note 4. One of those is the S-Pen, and the other is the fingerprint scanner. Ever since Apple installed a fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 5s, Samsung has followed. Samsung released their first fingerprint scanner on the S5, then the Alpha, and now the Note 4. It doesn't seem like they will be ditching the feature anytime soon.

The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to come with the same Synaptics' Natural ID solution as the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy S5. One annoyance with the current S5 fingerprint scanner, is that you have to slide your finger across the home button. That may change with the Note 4. According SamMobile, Samsung will use technology to split the the fingerprint sensor into two parts, one on the home button and the rest on the screen.

Another feature expected to launch on the Note 4, is the ability to unlock your device with different fingers to open different apps. This will be called Fingerprint Shortcuts and will be customizable.

The Note 4 will be debuted on September 3rd, and is looking at a September 15th release. Stay dialed on Phone Probe for all of the latest news surrounding the Galaxy Note 4.

New Nexus device won't be 'Nexus 6'

The latest news to come out surrounding the Google and Motorola collaboration about the new Nexus device is that it won't be called the 'Nexus 6'. This is due to a lawsuit that is being pursued by the estate of Philip K. Dick, who was a prominent sci-fi novelist. In his 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?", a bounty hunter hunts down androids known as Nexus-6 models.

The Philip K. Dick estate has been pursuing this lawsuit since the first Nexus device was released in early 2010. They believe that it is infringement on their intellectual-property rights.

If Google were to name their new Nexus device, the '6', it could be clearly seen as copyright infringement of the 1968 novel. The codename that is circulating around the new Nexus device has been 'Nexus X', which is not yet confirmed.

The new Nexus device is expected to ship with a 5.9 inch QHD display (1440 x 2560), a Snapdragon 805 CPU, and a 13 megapixel camera featuring optical image stabilization (OIS). This will most likely see a late--October or early-November release.Rumor has it, it will be a quiet Halloween release.

Print Hammermill: Review

Displaying PRINT Hammermill App.jpg

One accessory that almost always accompanies our computers is some sort of printing device. It is one of the only things that is lacking from smartphones today. As of late, smartphone manufacturers have been sending out their devices with pre-loaded applications to assist with wireless printing. However, most of the time they usually are only compatible with a certain printer brand and are very difficult to setup. Once it is set up, printing options are very limited.

Print Hammermill mobile printing is as simple as printing from a computer. It takes all of the headaches away from setting up your smartphone or tablet to sync up with your wireless printer. The app is compatible with both Apple and Android devices, and it can be found on the Google Play Store, Amazon Appstore, and Apple App Store for no charge. It also comes with a multitude of printing options including the ability to print emails, text messages, documents, and many more.

First of all, the most important thing for a printing app such as Print Hammermill, is its ability to make connecting to a WiFi or Bluetooth printer easy. We found out with this app, it is as simple as four clicks and you are connected to the printer.

Once you are connected to your printer, Print Hammermill has many options as to what to print. Unlike some apps that come stock on a device or other apps on the marketplace, this app allows you to print almost anything on your Android device from pictures on your Facebook to call history. On Apple the app is more limited to photos, web pages, email, contacts, and Facebook. This is due to the limited permissions on Apple devices. The full list of all options for Android can be seen on the lower left whereas the options for Apple can be seen on the lower right.

Not only does this app have a variety options of what to print, it also comes fitted with standard printing options you would normally see on your computer. This is extremely convenient and completely takes away the need to transfer any files that you want to print from your phone to your computer.

If you are worried about printing a document that has graphics in color and wasting your ink, there is an option to print in completely grayscale. This also works vice versa, if you want to print an image in high quality, there is a mode for that. We compared the same photo that was printed from a computer to the one printed from the smartphone and the colors were spot on and the quality was not lost.

On a computer, when you click print, it gives you the options to exclude certain pages and or increase the amount of the copies. That feature is not lost on this app, and it makes it even more convenient and less of a hassle of worrying about printing extra pages that don't need to be printed. You can choose between page ranges or the option to print either odd or even page numbers.

One thing that the app should improve upon, is giving the option to print a certain amount of texts and the ability to print an entire email thread in the printing option. If you wanted to print a few texts from a thread, you would have to print the entire thread. You could limit the page numbers to print just a certain page, but that is time consuming. If you wanted to print multiple emails from a single thread, you would have to print them individually, one at a time. In the options for printing contacts, you can choose which contacts you would like to print, anywhere from one or your entire contacts list. If they added this option for printing, it would definitely be a home-run app.

Overall, if you are in the market for a very well-rounded printing app because you don't have one, or the stock one on your device is seriously lacking power, Print Hammermill is for you. The easiness in setting up your device to connect to a wireless printer combined with the multitude of printing options make this a must for someone who prints on the go. International Paper has taken all of the printer settings found on your computer, and squeezed it all into an app. You can find the download links below.

Overall: 9/10

China Telecom releases images of the iPhone 6

Leaks regarding the iPhone 6 have been steady throughout the month, and today we have another. This image today comes from one of Apple's largest distributors. Chinese Telecom, the third largest mobile provider in China, accidentally released images of the upcoming iPhone 6 early. The post has been deleted, but once things get on the internet, its on there forever.

The image below shows the iPhone 6 in three colors, similar to that of the iPhone 5s. One thing we notice about the image below is that camera lens seems flush with the back panel of the device. Other leaked documents and images have reported that the camera lens was to protrude out, those this causes concerns for previous leaks.

There is sixteen days until the new iPhone will be debuted on September 9th, with an expected release of late-September or early-October. Leading up to the release, more and more images will continue to leak, and we'll have you covered.

Samsung Galaxy S5 takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: Donates to MND

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been storming the internet for the past couple of weeks, having notable people such as George W. Bush, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bill Gates take on the challenge and donate money.

The description of the disease can be seen below courtesy of the MND Assoc. website:

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help you achieve the best possible quality of life.
The latest 'celebrity' to take on the challenge is the Samsung Galaxy S5. Many are criticizing Samsung for using the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as a gimmick to promote their device. They tweeted a video, that can be seen above,  What they don't see is that Samsung has already donated. The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association was tagged in the original tweet from Samsung Mobile UK and it stated "Brr, Our #GS5 took the ALS #IceBucketChallenge in support of @MNDAssoc Are you up for the challenge?" The MND Association response can be seen below.

The donation amount is unspecified, but it would be hard to believe that a multi-billion dollar company would use a disease as a promotion and not donate. It would be a PR nightmare.

You can find out how to donate here for MND or here for ALS

Huge leak from Apple supplier regarding iPhone 6

The latest leaks regarding the most anticipated iPhone in history reveal expected size comparisons and dimensions. While we have seen images of the iPhone 6 assembly and parts, this gives us a detailed look at the dimensions. One thing worth noting is that the camera lens protrudes from the rear casing of the device. Previous leaks are now supported more than ever since the releasing of the images.

These are looking to be the thinnest iPhone to date. To give you a comparison, the iPhone 5s is .3" thick while the new Galaxy Alpha is .26"

The dimensions can be seen seen below.

Length x Width x Thickness

iPhone 6 (4.7"): 5.4" x 2.6" x .27"
iPhone 6L (5.5"): 6.2" x 3" x .27"

Sony Xperia Z3: Detailed image leaks

The Xperia Z3 has been spotted around the internet today ahead of its September 3rd debut. These new images show a detailed look of the Z3  from top to bottom. It seems as if the Xperia Z3 will come in two colors, white and black. Overall it retains the same look and feel of its predecessors.

The Z3 also will not feature any major spec improvements except maybe a newer Snapdragon 801 processor or possibly even the newer 805 processor. It is expected to come with Android 4.4.3, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage with the ability to expand it up to 64GB, a 20.7 megapixel camera, and retain its IP58 rating.

The newest leaked images can be seen below.

New Galaxy Note 4 camera details leak

The latest surrounding the Galaxy Note 4, is that it will come with a new 'side touch' feature while in landscape mode while the camera is active. It is essentially a faux camera button.

The picture below shows how this feature will work. It will be made possible by including a sensor where a normal camera button would be. This sensor will not be active while the device is in portrait mode or outside of the camera app.

The device will feature a 16-megapixel Sony IMX240 sensor coming along with optical image stabilization (OIS). Samsung has always been a camera focused smartphone manufacturer, and they are definitely improving upon that with the Note 4, which will be debuted on September 3rd.

128GB iPhone 6 expected to be released

A leaked image today has reinforced our speculations about how much storage the iPhone 6 will come with. Earlier, when luxurious manufacturer Brikk posted pre-orders for their Lux version of the iPhone 6, we first saw the ideas of a 128GB version.

This leaked image from Geek Bar, shows that the iPhone 6 will come with multiple storage options depending on your needs. The only one what is missing is a 32GB version. While this doesn't confirm or deny that the iPhone 6 won't come with that option, it is definitely a possibility. It is likely that if Apple debuts a 128GB version, it will be at the price of the of the 32GB version.
