Will a later release date hurt the sales of the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge?

This fall was highly anticipated due to the massive amount of devices that were to be debuted, mainly because of the Galaxy Note 4 and the iPhone 6. Well, September 3rd and September 9th have now passed, and we are left with four new devices. Two from both Samsung and Apple. Apple debuted their flagship iPhone in two variants, a 4.7 inch base device and a 5.5 inch premium device. Samsung debuted their iconic Galaxy Note in two variants as well, one with a standard display and another with a curved display.

Since the release of the Galaxy S5 didn't go as well as Samsung had hoped, they shifted all of their attention to the upcoming Note to make up for the sales. Leading up to the release of the S5, Samsung's shares were as low as they had been since August of 2013, but the device seemed to pick up the slack for awhile leading to Samsung's stock peaking on May 30th, around two months after the release of the S5. It has been on a downward trend since.

Thanks to the debut of the Note 4 and the Note Edge, Samsung's stock has been on a slight rising trend, even with the debut of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus yesterday. One thing that could derail this recent upswing is the release date of the new devices. Originally it was thought that Samsung moved up its debut and release date to take the iPhone 6 head-on and beat it on to the market. After the debut of the new Note devices, Samsung said the device would be released in October; the rumored release for the Note 4 and Note Edge is Friday, October 10, 2014.

Yesterday, the iPhone 6 was debuted, and it was expected to be released in October. Apple completely did a 180 and will release the two iPhone variants on September 19, 2014 in most markets. This throws a wrench into the gears of Samsung. Samsung was expected to beat the iPhone to the market to convert the consumers on the edge of iOS and Android to upgrade to the Note 4 or Note Edge. Those consumers on the edge may now go to Apple if they want to upgrade sooner.

We will have to wait for the Notes to be released this October. Samsung will definitely sell a lot of devices, but Apple will as well. Will the Note 4 and Note Edge be enough to take on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus? We'll have to wait and see.

What do you think? Will the Note series help salvage some profits for Samsung or will their smartphone profits continue to dwindle?

Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge Rundown/Specs

Today we finally got our first glimpse as to what Samsung had in store for us. Samsung debuted its much-anticipated Galaxy Note 4 and its Galaxy Edge with a two-sided display. They both come with the same internal specs as far as RAM and the processor, but we'll give you an in depth look at both of them.

The highlight of the new Note models is that both devices will sport a metal chassis, something we've seen previously on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, and a QHD display (1440 x 2560). Samsung's push to produce a more 'premium' phone is in full-swing just as the iPhone 6 is to be announced (coincidence?). The Note 4 and the Note Edge will both sport a Snapdragon 805 processor which has  a quad-core Krait 450 CPU clocked at 2.7 GHz. It is optimized for exactly what the Notes are bringing to the market: brilliant displays.

One of the major announcements surrounding the Notes, is that its ability to take a charge has dramatically improved. According to Samsung at their Unpacked Event, the Note will be able to reach a 50% from 0% in just 30 minutes. The Note 3 in comparison was able to take a 50% charge from 0% in around 55 minutes. This is a huge improvement. It is unknown if this is because of the Snapdragon 805 processor, Samsung's charge rate, or a combination of both. Either way, it cuts charging time in half.

Samsung has also been focused on the S-Pen quite a lot lately, and that can be seen in the previous teaser ads leading up to the Note's debut. Samsung announced that the new S-Pen has received an overhaul. It comes with more sensitivity to give it a realer feel to the pen and also to the writing. Previous versions of the S-Pen had to be held perpendicular to the device to get it to write, whereas the new pen has increased range on its writing ability.

Other features that both devices will include are as follows:

  • Heart-rate monitor
  • UV sensor
  • Faux-leather back

Galaxy Note 4

The Note 4 is the standard version of Samsung's newest Note. It comes with a 5.7 inch display, the same size as its predecessor, the Note 3. The new Note has also received a slight bump in battery size from 3200 mAh on the Note 3, to 3220 mAh on the Note 4. Samsung has stated that while the battery is only slightly larger and powering a QHD display, it still has 7.5% longer battery life. They didn't explain how, but it will. The Galaxy Note 4 will be released in four colors, white, black, pink and gold. The Galaxy Note 4's specs can be seen below.

Screen size: 5.7"
Resolution: 1440 x 2560 (515 ppi)

Dimensions: 6.04 x 3.09 x .33 inches

Battery: 3220 mAh
RAM: 3 GB

Galaxy Note Edge

The Note Edge is slightly different than the Note 4, sporting multiple displays. The Note Edge will sport a 5.6 inch main display (1440 x 2560) and a side bar display. This is a first for any phone manufacturer and Samsung is taking the leap. This device will also come with a smaller battery than its Note 4 counterpart with a 3000 mAh battery. This is probably due to the device caving in on one side creating less room for the battery and the S-Pen.

The side view will be viewed as a ticker of some sort. Messages and notifications can be streamed on this panel while doing other activities on the device without disturbing the current app. The side display will also be completely independent of the main display. This means that you can just check your messages on the side display without waking the entire 5.6 inch main display. The Note Edge will only be released in two colors, black and white. The specs for the Note Edge can be seen below.

Screen size: 5.6"
Resolution: 1440 x 25060 (525 ppi) - side panel (160 pixels)
Weight: 180 g
Dimensions: 6.04 x 3.15 x .33 inches

Battery: 3000 mAh
RAM: 3 GB
Storage: 32 GB expandable
Debut: September 3, 2014

Galaxy Note 'Edge' leaked before debut

Hours before Samsung's Unpacked event, renders of the highly-rumored phone with a three-sided display have leaked. This phone will still pack a QHD display (1440 x 2560) with an additional 160 pixels come on the sides of the device.

Both devices will pack a Snapdragon 805 processor (2.7 GHz), 4 GB of RAM, a full metal frame, 16 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), and will not come with IP certification.

The Edge comes with its unique side touchscreen which replaces physical buttons. Leaks on this device have been slim, but this is the best look we have on the Edge until the officially release in a few hours. We'll have you covered.
